Wilson teammates get eco-friendly with composting

Quick work by a group of teammates has made the Wilson plant a little greener.
Roy Christensen, Keith Griffith, Irma Villegas, David Bass, and Carlos Soto spent their lunch break Feb. 17 making their first compost bin for their on-site wildlife habitat. Irma worked with Jeff West in the cafeteria to get fruit and vegetable leftovers to compost. The bin is simple, sturdy, and easily rearranged if it needs to be moved or made bigger.
“I initially proposed the concept quite a while back (probably over a year ago), but it never made it off of the “to do” list,” said Roy Christensen. “After moving to Wilson, I built a small eco-friendly house in the middle of an 11-acre wooded lot. Enjoying both gardening and life in a rural wooded setting, composting has long been a part of everyday life. Irma and Sue (Mathewson) were both instrumental in saying “Let’s just make this happen”, and Keith Griffith pulled it all together.”
Since the blocks to build the compost were salvaged, and teammates did the labor themselves, there was no cost for a great asset to the habitat.
“(By having a compost pile) we’re reducing our impact by reducing waste going to the landfill, we’re building and enhancing soil naturally, and it lends itself readily to organic raised bed gardening,” Christensen said. “It’s also a value as a training aid for scouts, students, teammates, and the community.”
