Safety Education
Bridgestone Americas is a leader in teen driver safety efforts. Statistics show the number of teens killed in auto accidents is rising to epidemic proportions—with proper training and education, many of these tragedies are avoidable. Educating young drivers is an important step in making the roads safer for all drivers.
Our programs
Think Before You Drive, which is aligned with the Bridgestone Group’s global initiative of the same name, incorporates all of Bridgestone Americas’ consumer safety and education programs (Safety Scholars, Teens Drive Smart, tiresafety.com, Car Care Academies) under one comprehensive umbrella.
Teens Drive Smart, is Bridgestone Americas’ online platform for all company teen driver safety efforts. The Web site includes tips, quizzes, games, and information on how new drivers can stay safe on the road. The goal is to put safety education resources in the hands of teens and parents—-free of charge.
Safety Scholars is a scholarship video contest in its fourth year. Teens 16-21 create videos on driver safety topics, such as distracted driving and seatbelt use, and submit them online. The top ten submissions are chosen, and America votes online for the ones they think should be featured nationwide as public service announcements. The winners get a $5,000 scholarship to the college of their choice.
Programs we Support
Driver’s Edge provides a free educational program for young drivers (aged 15-21) teaching real life emergency avoidance and response techniques and overall driver safety. This innovative youth program is taught by true driving professionals through a unique combination of behind the wheel and classroom experiences. Driver’s Edge was specifically developed to address the unacceptably high number of youth related automobile collisions and fatalities that occur each year.
Through Bridgestone Americas support, Driver’s Edge continues to help educate teenage drivers contributing to improved safety.
Bridgestone’s Latin American division has also created a number of initiatives around the Think Before You Drive platform.
- Bridgestone Mexico has also launched a successful Think Before You Drive campaign. The company has partnered with local and national automobile organizations to present events and raise awareness about tire pressure and distracted driving, and safe driving on motorcycles.
- Under the umbrella of the Think Before You Drive program, Bridgestone Costa Rica developed, in agreement with the major newspaper (Grupo Nación), the major open TV channel (Canal 7) and a major hotel chain, the “I drive responsibly” program. The program uses TV shorts, Radio spots, newspaper advertisements and school visits to raise awareness among more than 28,000 thousand drivers.
- In 2009, Bridgestone Argentina joined Toyota Argentina as a partner in their “Toyota y Vos” program, targeted at youth ages 17 to 23 years old and their parents. Youth participated in different driving sessions that included distracting situations, braking movements on a straight line and bends and slalom exercises. Meanwhile, parents were able to watch the consequences of a crash at 15 km/h on Bridgestone crash simulator.
