Girl Scouts get hands-on training from BSRO

Girl Scout Troop 31693 of Walnut Creek has learned all about cars, thanks to a Car Care Academy at the Concord Firestone Complete Auto Care Feb. 6.
The girls participated in the event to help earn their Car Sense Interest Project Badge. In order for the troop to complete the Interest Project, they have to complete seven out of 20 items, including a Service Project for the community.
The troop of six girls and two adults not only learned the ins and outs of oil changes, fluids, brakes and tires, but they also got their hands dirty learning to check tire pressure and tire tread and how to take off and put on a tire. Manager Kenny Counce also taught them about different fluids and where they’re found in the vehicle.
“The girls loved the hands on, and being able to do the work without being instructed,” said Tracy Szantyr, Office Manager for BSRO’s San Francisco District. “They actually like seeing how a tire comes off the rim and how to put a new one on and balance it. They were amazed that the tire balancer was hooked up to a computer that instructs us where to put the wheel weights.”
Szantyr also said the Car Care Academy emphasizes that oil and tires collected at FCAC locations are recycled and reused in items such as sidewalks, roads, etc.
“Extremely important to Girl Scouting is the Green effort, and the girls were happy that Firestone is going the same direction with recycling tires and oil,” Szantyr said.
The Concord Store offers Car Care Academies annually in February/March for troops with girls ages 15 and older.
